Frequently Asked Questions

We love welcoming new patients from Kingston, Ontario and surrounding areas. Whether you’re visiting us for Naturopathic care, Acupuncture, IV therapy, integrative cancer support, or psychotherapy here are answers to the most common questions we hear.

  • NDs and MDs both receive extensive medical training, but our approach differs in philosophy. While MDs often focus on acute symptom management, NDs prioritize finding the "root cause" of illness and use natural therapies (nutrition, herbs, lifestyle) to support the body’s innate ability to heal.

  • Absolutely. At Natural Route, our treatments are evidence-informed. We stay current with the latest clinical research and often use functional lab testing (like SIBO or hormone panels) to guide our protocols.

  • Yes—we prioritize integrative care. We believe you get the best results when your healthcare team works together. We encourage open communication with your family doctor, specialists, or other providers to ensure a cohesive approach.

While time constraints in the conventional system can sometimes limit direct dialogue, we bridge the gap by:

    • Ensuring Safety: We cross-reference all natural health products with your current medications to prevent potential interactions.

    • Providing Documentation: We can provide you with summaries or lab results from your visits to share with your primary care team.

    • Coordinating Goals: Our treatments are designed to complement, not complicate, your existing medical protocols.

Our primary goal is to ensure your care is safe, evidence-informed, and perfectly tailored to your unique needs.

  • In Ontario, OHIP does not cover Naturopathic medicine. However, many extended health insurance plans include coverage for Naturopathic services. Payment is collected at the time of your appointment, and we provide a detailed receipt for you to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

Extended health benefits often also cover services from Registered Acupuncturists, Registered Psychotherapists, and consultations with a Social Worker. Additional services, such as lab testing, professional-grade supplements, and IV therapy treatments, may also be eligible for coverage. Please check with your individual insurance provider to confirm your specific benefits.

For patients without extended health insurance, consultations with most licensed and regulated healthcare providers are considered eligible medical expenses and may be claimed on your annual tax return.

  • While there are many wonderful practitioners in the city, Natural Route Health is unique for three main reasons:

    • A Truly Integrated Team: We aren’t just a group of independent practitioners sharing a hallway. We are a collaborative collective. Our Naturopathic Doctors work alongside Registered Psychotherapists, Acupuncturists, and Social Workers to ensure your mental and physical health are treated as one.

    • Depth of Experience: Founded in 2013, we are one of Kingston’s most established integrative clinics. With 11 providers on staff, we offer a level of specialized knowledge—from Integrative Cancer Care and Child Behaviour to Bio-identical Hormones—that is difficult to find in a solo practice.

    • Data-Driven Naturals: We bridge the gap between "holistic" and "scientific." By utilizing advanced functional testing (like SIBO breath tests, Dutch hormone panels, and the InBody 380 composition analyzer), we take the guesswork out of your treatment plan.

  • Yes. To make your treatment plan as seamless as possible, we offer two convenient ways to access professional-grade supplements:

    • In-House Dispensary: We maintain a curated selection of high-quality, practitioner-only supplements right at our Kingston clinic. You can pick up your recommended formulas immediately following your appointment.

    • Online Dispensary: For those who prefer home delivery or are working with us virtually, we provide access to a secure online dispensary. This allows you to reorder your supplements anytime and have them shipped directly to your door across Ontario.

  • The supplements we carry are "practitioner-grade," meaning they are third-party tested for purity, potency, and absorbency. When you buy through Natural Route, you are ensuring that you are getting the exact dosage and quality your practitioner intended, without fillers or unnecessary additives.

  • Not at all. Many of our patients see an ND for hormonal support while simultaneously working with our Psychotherapists for stress management. Because we are a team, we can securely share insights (with your consent) to make your care seamless.

  • Yes. We offer comprehensive on-site and take-home functional testing that often goes beyond what is available in conventional settings, giving us a clearer picture of your "root cause.

  • Yes! We are located at 734 Arlington Park Place in a fully accessible, ground-floor space with plenty of free parking, making it easy for patients with mobility concerns or young children in strollers to visit us.

  • Many patients say they appreciate the unhurried, one-on-one attention they receive here. Your 60-90 minute initial visit includes:

    • A detailed discussion of your health history and wellness goals.

    • Physical assessments as needed (conducted by your Naturopathic Doctor).

    • Time for questions regarding your specific care options.

    • A customized plan with clear next steps for your healing journey.

  • The number of visits varies depending on your unique health goals. Your provider will discuss a care plan with you and adjust recommendations as your progress is assessed.

    • Quick wins: Some patients notice improvements shortly after starting.

    • Long-term support: Others benefit from ongoing, seasonal, or periodic check-ins to maintain optimal health.

  • To get the most out of your time with us, we recommend the following:

    • Documentation: Bring any recent lab results or medical reports.

    • Medication List: Prepare a list of current medications and supplements.

    • Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing, especially for Acupuncture or physical assessments.

    • Arrival: Arrive a few minutes early to settle in and relax.

    • Session Prep: For psychotherapy or social work, consider any specific topics you’d like to prioritize.

  • For virtual care, please ensure you are in a private, quiet space with a secure internet connection. This protects your privacy and allows you to maintain focus during the session.
