Wheat is not the GMO to avoid, these are

Dr. Andrea Hilborn, ND

At the end of last year, an excellent report was released that proposes an explanation for why gluten sensitivity is becoming more and more common. After all the Wheat Belly hype, I was surprised to learn that wheat is not a genetically modified organism (GMO), and it is actually other foods that we need to be wary of. GMO crops were developed to be able to withstand pesticides. Right now, we have GMO soy, corn, cottonseed oil, sugarbeets, zucchini, yellow squash, Hawaiian papaya and alfalfa. The most significant of those are obviously corn and soy, which, besides being eaten on their own, also make their way into a lot of prepared foods. A doctor who participated in the report found that asking patients to remove gluten AND any GMOs improved the speed and quality of their recovery. My husband was recently telling me about a study that compared hogs given regular feed to hogs given GMO-free feed. The hogs that ate the regular feed had more digestive issues such as chronic diarrhea. We feed only GMO-free grains at our farm. To avoid GMOs, buy organic foods, or look for a GMO-free label.
